Mertens and WWU Viking finish second in nation! -- Catherine Mertens and the Western Washington University Vikings went as far as any team could go without walking away with a national championship.

Former Bear moves to Division II Quarterfinals with WWU Vikings -- Catherine Mertens and the Western Washington University Vikings will make their first trip to the Elite Eight next Thursday, November 29. Catherine was a stand-out middle-blocker for the Bears in 2005. Read more about the Vikings record setting run.

Oly's season ends at Districts -- The Bears finished just out of the running for one of the six spots for the State Tournament. The season ended with the same highs and lows that followed the team throughout the season.
Oly split two matches on Thursday, beating Kentridge and later falling to Curtis, which put them in loser-out matches on Saturday.
The Bears played tough in the first match on Saturday, knocking out Wilson 3-2. They then dropped the next match to Kentlake 0-3.
It was a fun season with some very good team dynamics. Jackie Reese summed up the season, "I still thought we had a team that could win even when we were down by 10 points in the last game."

Bears improve seeding for Districts -- The Bears moved from a fifth place league finish into the second-place seed for next Friday's District Tourney at Kentwood.
Oly knocked off unbeaten Gig Harbor in a thrilling five-game match at the League Tournament on Saturday at Mt. Tahoma. Oly took the first game handily with strong serving, surprising the Tides 25-13. GH then rallied for two games 16-25 and 20-25.
Though they lost the game, the Bears ended the third game with a rally that carried over into the fourth game and they never looked back. Oly took the final two games 25-19 and 15-7.
The win over GH set up the match for first and second between Oly and Bellarmine. Neither team looked sharp as the Lions took the first spot away in four games, 1-3.
The District Bracket has Oly next facing the South Puget Sound League 8th seed, Kentridge, at noon Friday.
Gig Harbor went on to finish fourth with a loss against Wilson who took over the third spot. Last year's first place Central Kitsap finished by beating Stadium for the fifth and sixth seeds. South Kitsap and North Kitsap were eliminated.

Olympia tops CK in first round of League -- Rosa Gimson had 12 kills, 3 blocks, and 4 aces as the Bears beat Central Kitsap 25-14, 25-17, and 25-23. The win is the first against the Cougars in four match-ups this season.
Megan Triggs had some stellar digs against a tough-serving Cougar team. Triggs' 18 digs combined with 8 from Liz Armstrong sparked a strong offensive effort at the net. Brigit Miller racked up 29 assists for the night.
The win gives the Bears a second round match against Gig Harbor--the winner of a match tonight against SK--at noon Saturday. The winner will play for 1st or 2nd and the loser moves to a match to determine the 3rd and 4th seeds for the District tourney.
Also at League, Bellarmine defeated North Kitsap 3-0 and Wilson topped Stadium 3-0. The two winners will face off at noon on Saturday and NK will face Stadium in a loser-out match. South Kitsap and Central Kitsap will meet in the other loser-out match. Winners in these consolation bracket games will face off for 5th and 6th seeds.

Narrows match-ups set -- The Bears defeated Mt. Tahoma on "Senior Night" in three straight games.
The win combined with CK's win over North Kitsap solidified the Bear's fifth place finish in league. Oly and CK will face each other again Thursday at Gig Harbor at 5:30pm in the Narrows seeding tournament. The winner will play again Saturday at noon and the loser will play at 9:30am. Both of Saturday's games are at Mt. Tahoma.
Gig Harbor finished the regular season undefeated by topping Wilson 3-1. Bellarmine locked up third place in league after a 3-0 win over South Kitsap. Lincoln also defeated Foss 3-2.
Other Thursday night match-ups include North Kitsap versus Bellarmine and Stadium against Wilson--both games are at Wilson High. South Kitsap will face Gig Harbor after the Oly/CK match.
Six of the eight teams will move on to the District tourney. The first two teams to lose their second match will end their seasons on Saturday morning.
JV also finished the season strongly with a win over Mt. Tahoma and a first-place finish in weekend tourney at Black Hills. C Team also swept their match. Way to go Bears!

Cougs beat Bears -- Oly dropped a tough match to a solid Central Kitsap team. The win means CK and Oly are tied for fourth place in the Narrows League with only one match left for each team. Oly faces Mt. Tahoma at OHS and CK will be at home to face North Kitsap.
The JV Bears also lost to CK 0-3. The C Team was scheduled to play Foss but the opposing team did not show up.
Undefeated Gig Harbor continued their streak, beating Mt. Tahoma 3-0. In other action, North Kitsap beat Lincoln 3-1, Wilson beat Stadium 3-0, and South Kitsap took out Foss 3-0.

Bears vex Vikings -- The crowd was rowdy and the reffing was less than stellar but the Bears hung tough and downed the North Kitsap Vikings 3-0.
NK kept it close but never really threatened as Oly put it away 25-16, 25-18, and 25-20.
Brigit Miller had a solid game with 22 assists, 4 blocks and 4 aces. Liz Armstrong had 8 kills, Nicole Mertens had 6 kills, and Jackie Reese had 5 kills from the middle.
JV and C also swept their matches in North Kitsap.
There weren't a lot of surprises in the Narrows Monday as Bellarmine topped Stadium, Gig Harbor beat Foss, Lincoln downed Mt. Tahoma, and Wilson stopped South Kitsap. All 5 Narrows matches were three-game sweeps.

Oly keeps Abes honest -- The Bears took on the Lincoln Abes in Tacoma and won in three straight.
Oly was firing on all cylinders on offense and stayed focused throughout the match. Liz Armstrong and Nicole Mertens combined for 17 kills from the outside. Rosa Gimson put together 8 kills, 2 blocks, and 8 digs with a tough service game.
JV and C teams also swept their matches.
The teams in the Narrows League continue to jostle for position for the eight spots available in the league placement tourney--six of which will move on to Districts. In other early league results, Bellarmine topped Foss 3-0 and Stadium beat Mt. Tahoma 3-0. Gig Harbor remained undefeated by beating CK in a 3-2 thriller. Oly's next opponent, North Kitsap, defeated South Kitsap 3-2.

Bears have bye -- The Bears were off on Tuesday while the rest of the Narrows League battled. Wilson beat Bellarmine in a 5-game shoot-out to hand the Lions their second loss in league. Wilson's only loss came in a 0-3 match at Oly.
In other action, South Kitsap beat Mt. Tahoma 3-0, Lincoln dropped three in a row at Central Kitsap, Stadium won at Foss 3-0, and Gig Harbor travelled to North Kitsap where they dropped the Vikings 3-0.

Bears take bite out of Wolves -- The Bears went to South Kitsap High School and beat the Wolves 3-0.
The two teams exchanged runs in the first game but Oly pulled ahead in the end to finish 25-20. The Bears got on track in the next two games, winning 25-11 and 25-10.
Michelle Woodward had a couple of defining-moment kills and a fine night at the service line with 5 aces. Liz Armstrong and Nicole Mertens combined for 19 kills from the outside.
JV played strong and also won 3-0. C-team went to Stadium and the results will be posted when reported.
In other action, CK handled Stadium 3-0, Gig Harbor beat Lincoln 3-0, NK fell to Bellarmine 0-3, and Wilson topped Mt. Tahoma.

Olympia drops to the Tides -- The Gig Harbor Tides came to Olympia and took one from the Bears. Olympia came out strong, winning the first game 25-15. Both teams then exchanged games until GH put it away in game five.
JV won all three of their games in convincing fashion. C-team also won 2-1 to improve their record to 5-0 league and 7-1 overall.
Also in the Narrows, Bellarmine beat Mount Tahoma 3-0, Wilson foiled Foss 3-0, North Kitsap stopped Stadium 3-2, and CK defeated SK 3-0.

Olympia falls at Bellarmine -- Olympia dropped their first match to Bellarmine, losing 0-3. The Bears had an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors against a seemingly beatable Lions team.
JV won convincingly in all three of their games. C Team was also victorious, winning 2-1.
Oly looks forward to their next match against a tough Gig Harbor team Tuesday, October 2nd at home.
In other Narrows League match-ups, Stadium beat Lincoln in 3, North Kitsap downed Foss 3-0, Gig Harbor got by South Kitsap 3-2, and Wilson surprised Central Kitsap 3-0.

Tigers trip at Olympia -- Olympia showed their depth Monday evening against Stadium when starting setter Brigit Miller was injured during warm-ups. Amia Huang stepped up as the Bears rolled 25-19, 25-10, and 25-15. Huang had 23 assists and was 25 out of 26 serving with 5 aces.
Middle blocker Rosa Gimson had 10 kills and 4 digs and Nicole Mertens had 7 kills from the outside.
Also tonight, Mount Tahoma put down Foss 3-0, Wilson defeated N. Kitsap 3-1, and South Kitsap dumped Lincoln 3-0.

Oly foils Foss -- The Bears beat Henry Foss in Tacoma on Thursday. The Bears were without an ailing Liz Armstrong but the rest of the team stepped up and handled Foss in three games, 25-11, 25-10, and 25-6.
Amia Huang had 7 kills and Rosa Gimson and Jackie Reese had 5 kills and 4 kills, respectively, all fed by Brigit Miller's 20 assists.
In other Narrows action, Gig Harbor downed Bellarmine 3-2, Stadium beat S. Kitsap 3-1, CK put away Mt. Tahoma 3-0, and Wilson defeated Lincoln 3-0. North Kitsap topped Steilacoom in a non-league match 3-0.

Bears beat Wilson at home -- Wilson came to the Oly home court and went down in three straight on Tuesday. The Bears were tough on offense and defense in the first game, winning 25-17.
The second game was unusual as Oly struggled a bit from the service line but regained their composure long enough to win 26-24. The Bears fought a rally-filled third game to a 27-25 win with a defining kill to end the match.
The JV Team also won in two straight with strong performances on both sides of the net.
In other Narrows League action, Bellarmine beat Lincoln 3-0, Gig Harbor beat Stadium 3-1, CK defeated Foss 3-0, and North Kitsap got by Mt. Tahoma 3-1. South Kitsap had a bye.

Oly keeps it rolling -- The Bears went to Fife on Thursday and defeated the Trojans in front of a rowdy crowd.
Rosa Gimson was a perfect 22 for 22 at the service line and Elizabeth Armstrong had 14 kills as Olympia won three in a row, 25-19, 25-18, and 25-22.
The Bears played well overall and looked ready for the weekend Kent Classic tournament. Olympia will face Selah and Kentridge in pool play Saturday.
The Junior Varsity Bears also won all 3 games.

Bears defeat cross-town rivals -- The Bears went to hostile territory on Thursday evening and faced a scrappy Capital Cougar team. The Bears won a close first game then looked strong in the second game, putting the Cougs away 25-14. They lost some momentum in a close third game and then sealed the match with a win in the fourth. The Bears played tough defensively throughout the match.
The JV Team also won in two games. The C-Team went 1-2 in a seesaw battle.

Successful home opener for the Bears -- The Bears took on the North Thurston Rams Tuesday evening on their home court. The team looked polished for a season-opener, winning handily in 3 games. Coach Creighton had the luxury of trying several different line-ups with all making a strong showing.
The C Team was also in good form, winning all three games. JV went 1-2 in a tough battle. |
