Summer Conditioning 2017

Summer conditioning workouts begin on July 3rd at 8:30am in the auxiliary gym/weight room. We invite high school players including next year’s 9th graders to join us. Workouts will last 90 minutes, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. We will determine after the first week, if any adjustment to the time needs to be made. Potentially, we would meet a few minutes later, if necessary.

The summer open gym/practice/tutoring schedule is 6:30pm, Tuesday and/or Thursday nights in July, at Washington MS, beginning July 6th. This will be an opportunity for skill work, small group tutoring and scrimmages. We are unable to hold open gyms at OHS due to both of our gym floors being refinished this summer. Further details will to come.

REQUIRED CLEARANCE FOR SUMMER

For any high school student to be allowed to participate in summer activities (practices, weight room, open gyms, camps, etc.), the following two requirements must be met:

  1. A current physical on file with the AD’s office (physicals are valid for 13 months)
  2. “Assumption of Risk and Permission to Participate” form completed and returned to the OHS Athletics office.

News from Coach Creighton – Spring 2017

Turning the page on the calendar for April brings the chance to share news about upcoming volleyball activities. Hopefully, this information will help families in planning summer schedules.

This letter is being sent to OHS freshmen, sophomore and junior players and to all current 8th graders who played last fall at their respective schools. If you are uncertain whether you will pursue volleyball this upcoming season, at least you’ll be aware of the opportunities. We would ask that you consider joining us for summer camp in order to help with your decision. If you’re an eighth grader who doesn’t plan to turnout for volleyball, I encourage you to be involved in some sport or activity as you enter high school. It makes a huge and positive impact on your start at OHS! Before we get to the details…

Congratulations to Lauren Wilson…for her outstanding performance at the All-State Volleyball Match, March 11th at Auburn-Riverside H.S. Lauren led her squad with a strong competitive effort.

SUMMER CAMP dates are set. The Oly-Capital Camp will be June 26-28. *Please note the location change! Due to facility work at Oly, we are holding camp at Capital this year! Camp is a great way to reconnect with teammates and volleyball. If you’re at all undecided about turning out, it’s a great way to get a feel for our program, coaches and expectations. We place a strong emphasis on fundamentals and building individual skills to the next level. It’s a great tune-up for other camps and it remains one of our major fundraisers. Registration will be limited more than normal due to the joint Oly- Capital camp and to keep our player to coach ratio low, thus ensuring a quality experience. So, register ASAP. Money must accompany your registration to reserve a spot.

The Volleykidz clinic will return June 29 & 30! We’re excited to help the youth of our community have fun while gaining skills in the game of volleyball! Current coaches and players will assist in this process. Our sessions will take place from 9 to noon, both days.

In addition, a number of returning players will be attending the UW Team Camp, July 22-24. Unfortunately, this camp limits the number of players we are allowed to bring. We do encourage players to attend another camp in addition to Olympia’s. The specific fundamentals that we teach at Olympia are best learned at the UW Camps. However, they sell out quickly. Two other camps that teach the same skill-set as Olympia are: Northwest University (Kirkland) and St. Martins. Check their respective volleyball websites for their brochure and more information. Included on the second page of this letter is a list of a few other camp opportunities.

STRENGTH TRAINING and conditioning is an integral part of preparation for all players, especially for returning varsity players and those with aspirations of playing at the varsity level. OHS has an outstanding weight room facility. Our off-season conditioning program is currently underway for all high school players not involved in OHS spring sports. Congratulations to those who’ve consistently participated the first four weeks.
2016 Varsity post-season costume practice We meet every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of May. Please join us…we finish each day at 3:30! Consistent attendance AND hard work together brings improved strength, quickness and jumping ability, plus – injury prevention, increased confidence, and ultimately…team bonding. We ask that current 8th graders wait until the summer program to begin. Our Summer Session will be introduced on Monday, July 3rd.

OPEN GYM. Please note the listings for times/locations of open gyms around town. Also, there are plans to offer open gym at OHS, beginning the end of May, for current 9th – 11th graders. Check future emails for announcements of the schedule. In addition, we are hoping to offer open gym following summer weight room workouts (typically on Fridays) and these will be open to all incoming freshmen through seniors. We are working to secure summer gym space, since OHS will be unavailable for the aforementioned facility work.

OUTDOOR PLAY. There are typically a number of possibilities for outdoor doubles play, plus a 4 on 4 outdoor league through Lacey Parks & Rec. Doubles play is a great way to improve your court awareness and all around skill level. The most prominent of the local outdoor tournaments is Lakefair.

THE SEASON BEGINS on August 21st with three days of tryouts. Count on having “two-a-days” during thes e first three days. Our retreat is set for August 25th and August 26th, an important early-season event for all selected players to attend. Also, please note the other early season dates, as listed on page two.

SPORTS PHYSICALS. To our knowledge, the district is, again, offering FREE Sport Physicals. The date is typically the beginning of June, but is still TBD. Details will be available on the OHS Athletic website, soon. There may be a set schedule of when to appear – by gender and grade level. If you’re scheduling your own physical, be sur e to get an appointment with your family physician ASAP , for the pur pose of eligibility clearance.

BOOSTER CLUB. A HUGE “Thank you” goes to Heather Schwartz for her faithful service as president, for two-straight years!!! Also, “Thank You” to Steven Drutz, who has done a great job as club treasurer. We continue to appreciate Kenna Canaan’s work for her administration of our website, olympiabearsvolleyball.com, and the Facebook page.

GROWL – OHS Athletics Hall of Fame Dinner Auction is coming soon…Saturday, the 29th!! This annual fundraiser supports our athletic teams and honors successful former OHS athletes and coaches. Summer Training 2016

On Wednesday, June 29th from 8:30 am – 10:30 am, in the auxiliary gym/weight room, we will introduce our summer workout program and invite high school players including next year’s 9th graders to join us. Summer workouts will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 am – 10:00 am through August 19th. Each of the workouts will start in the auxiliary gym and move to the weight room at 9:00 am.

If a student athlete misses the introduction, they should attend the next available session and a coach, supervisor or experienced lifter will help get them started. Consistency and proper technique are the keys to improvement! We have a “vacation” workout to send home when players need to miss.

SUMMER CLEARANCE PACKETS

Any high school student participating in summer activities (practices, weight room, open gyms, camps, etc.) will need to complete a summer clearance packet found on the OHS Athletic website. Clearance packets include a current physical examination (physicals are valid for 13 months).

Packets must be completed and submitted to the OHS Athletics office prior to being cleared to participate. They will be accepted during lunch or after school (until 3:00pm).

Spring Training 2016

Our off-season conditioning program will kick off on Tuesday, March 8th for all high school players not involved in an OHS Spring sport. We will meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school through the end of May. Join us at the weight room by 2:35 pm, dressed and ready to go. We finish each day at 3:30 pm. We ask that current 8th graders wait until the Summer program begins in late June.

Summer Volleyball Training 2015

Our Summer Session of strength training and conditioning will be introduced on June 22, 2015 at 8:30am in the Auxiliary gym. We will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30am – 10:00am throughout the summer. IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL athletes must be CLEARED for ALL summer participation (workouts and open gyms). Please contact the OHS Athletic Director’s office to complete the process. You must have an updated physical on file with the OHS AD’s office.

Open Gym

We will have open gym at OHS on June 2nd & 4th from 2:35pm – 4:00pm for current 9th – 11th graders. Instruction/feedback and scrimmage time available.

In addition, open gym will be offered a few times following summer weight room workouts (typically on Fridays) and will be open to all incoming freshmen through seniors.

OPEN GYMS AROUND TOWN:

  • South Sound Sports Center (SSSC) – Wednesdays and Sundays from 6pm to 9pm ($3 per person)
  • The Valley Athletic Club – Sundays 6pm to 8pm in Gym 1 – free for members (need at least 2), $5 visitor fee for non-members under 18). Call 15 minutes ahead of time to have net set up. NOTE: We can also choose Monday-Friday at 7:30pm if we have at least 6 people. If you are interested in setting up another volleyball open gym option at the Valley, email Kenna Canaan to coordinate a new time option.
